SCULPTING SOCIETY
"Every man is an artist", and society is a raw material that needs to be sculpted by any of us through our own creativity.
Just like the sculptor molds clay into a higher form, every individual
could mold their life and environment into a more harmonious form.

“The role of the artist is not to give visual stimulus to society, but a morale, psychological and social therapy"
- Joseph Beuys |
JOSEPH BEUYS – THE BASICS OF SOCIAL SCULPTURE
May
be the most influential artist since the 1960’s, Joseph Beuys might be
as well as the most misunderstood. His complex thinking informed by
anthropology, anthroposophy, psychology, alchemy and poetry provides a
strong power and infinite layers to his symbolic aktions.
For him, “Every man is an artist”, and society is a raw material that
needs to be shaped, sculpted by any of us through our own creativity.
This
lecture enlightens the psychological, philosophical and artistic
practice of Joseph Beuys, focusing on the “Social Sculpture” component.
It
presents the inspiring Watts House Project led by conceptual artist
Edgar Arcenaux as a concrete example of social sculpture. Therefore,
this on-gong project transcends constructively the boundaries between
art and life, with a core quality of empowerment, engagement and
replication. |
